WiLDAF Tanzania was honored to host the Deputy Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs

WiLDAF Tanzania was honoured to host the Deputy Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Hon. Zainab Athumani Katimba, during her visit to our offices today.

During the engagement, WiLDAF showcased its community-driven work through the Legal Aid Unit, which continues to expand access to justice for women and marginalized communities by providing legal aid, legal literacy, and support to survivors of gender-based violence. The delegation also learned about our ongoing initiatives to prevent and respond to GBV, including the recently concluded GBV Caravan Campaign, which mobilized communities to challenge harmful norms and stand against violence.

At WiLDAF, we believe that access to justice is a fundamental pillar of gender equality. When women and girls understand their rights and are supported to claim them, justice systems become more responsive, inclusive, and transformative.

This visit reflects a shared commitment to advancing transformative legal reforms that center women’s rights, dignity, and equality in Tanzania’s legal and governance frameworks.

WiLDAF appreciates the Ministry for this important engagement and looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing critical legal reforms, including:

Amendment of the Law of Marriage Act, 1971
Amendment of the Local Customary Declaration Order, 1961
Enactment of a Comprehensive Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Law

These reforms are essential to dismantling discriminatory legal frameworks, strengthening access to justice, and building a just, inclusive, and gender-equitable Tanzania where women and girls live free from violence and discrimination.
